bagage depot / left luggage office / Gepäckaufbewahrung

The provincial town of Delden, Netherlands, uses its former station building, situated on a still busy railway line, as civic art gallery. During many years, this is utilised by artist group MIKC for their exhibition series Perron 1. MIKC invites Dutch as well as international artists to create work tailored to this space.
From 16 March to 20 April 2001, Karl-Heinz Mauermann shows the room installation bagage depot / left luggage office / Gepäckaufbewahrung. Twelve torsoes, of male shop window dummies, are staring fixedly and immovably into the space of the small former station hall. Twelve suitcases are heaped against the opposite wall. Apparently thrown there at random, pell-mell, slightly open. Within, lights dim up and down, from light back to darkness. This play of light is not synchronic. The suitcases appear to be alive.

At night, the light from the suitcases shines far out through the windows. The mysterious play of light is visible both from the platform and the street. Travellers and commuters are as fascinated as passers-by and passing motorists.
